Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Fox Terrier, also known as American Toy Terrier and Amertoy, was developed in the USA in the 1930's. Its first use was hunting rats. There is a clear relationship to the Smooth Fox Terrier. Crosses with English Toy Terriers, Chihuahuas, and Italian Greyhounds have refined its features, and calmed its disposition. It is currently seeking AKC recognition.

Height: 10" (25.4cm)

Weight: 3.5 - 7 lbs (1.6 - 3.1 kg)

Coat Type: The Toy Fox Terrier has a smooth, short, satiny coat that is easy to care for and to groom, with grooming only required on a weekly basis. The tri-colored form with white predominating in the coat is favored in the show ring.

Temperament: The temperament of the Toy Fox Terrier should be that of both a Toy in that they are loving, affectionate, and utterly loyal, and that of a Terrier - alert, inquisitive, agile, athletic and love the hunt. The Toy influence has diminished the aggressiveness and hyperactivity prevalent in many Terriers. This is an exceptionally intelligent little dog who thinks he weighs 90 pounds.

Health Problems: There are some typical Toy problems of stifle, Legg Calves Perthes, but otherwise a healthy breed. Some dogs exhibit allergies to beet pulp (fairly common), corn, and wheat. This small dog does not tolerate the cold weather outside; so provide him with a coat when out in the winter.

Special Interest: Some of these little fellows have been trained to assist handicapped people around the home.
