Presa Canario
The (Perro de) Presa Canario, also known as the Canary Dog or Perro Basto or Verdino, has been known in the Canary Islands since the 16th centure. It was developed there by crossing native dogs with the Bardino (or Majorero) now extinct, and with Bulldogs and Mastiffs that were introduced to these islands in the 19th century. It was originally used as a fighting dog and nearly became extinct when dog fighting became banned. However, Spanish breeders took interest in it in the 1960's and the breed was restored somewhat in numbers. It has also been used as a herding dog and as a guard dog. This is a strong, athletic and agile dog.

Coat Type: The coat is short and somewhat rough over a semi-loose skin; it has no undercoat. The Presa requires little grooming.
