Epagneul Francais
The Epagneul Français, known as the French Spaniel and the French Setter, is one of the oldest spaniels, originating in France as early as the 1300's. It may be related to the Small Münsterlander from Germany, and is considered one of the forerunners of the modern stters. Its primary use was as a setting dog, freezing as soon as it scented feathered game; it also is a good in retrieving feathered game. Although this dog was close to extinction at one time, it is now in good numbers in France, but still rare outside of France.

Coat Type: The coat is flat and short with some feathering; the coat requires regular brushing.
Temperament: The Epagneul Français is a docile and intelligent dog, and a keen worker. It makes a nice family dog with its placid and affectionate demeanor, and easy trainability, but does require regular exercise.
Health Problems: Generally a healthy dog that can work well in cold weather and icy waters.
