Curly Coated Retriever
The Curly-coated Retriever originated in Great Britain during the 1800's to retrieve water fowl. Water spaniels probably contributed to its distinctive coat. Labradors and Poodles may have contributed some genes to this breed as well. This dog is a multi-purpose hunting dog which needs a lot of exercise.
Height: 25 - 27" (63.5 - 63.5cm) for dogs, 23 - 25" (58.4 - 58.4cm) for bitches
Weight: 70 - 80 lbs (31.2 - 35.7 kg)
Coat Type: Its body is covered with a tightly curled, black- or liver-colored coat, which does not need trimming. By contrast, its facial hair is distinctively smooth. The coat is water-proof and dries quickly.
Temperament: The Curly-coated Retriever is a responsive and friendly breed which takes to the water without hesitation. As a working dog, it is intelligent, eager and very courageous. It is a calm dog which may seem aloof at times.
Health Problems: This breed seems to a predisposition to cancer; as well some individuals develop bald patches.
Special Interest: The Curly-coated Retriever, one of the oldest retriever breeds, is still very popular, especially in Australia and New Zealand.
