Akbash
The Akbash is the Turkish counterpart of the other white guard dog breeds found in Europe and around the Mediterranean. Its original role was that of a livestock guardian. The Akbash is striking in its white color, it's tall, long-legged appearance and its refined elegance.
Height: 28 - 31" (71.1 - 71.1cm) for dogs, 27 - 29" (68.6 - 68.6cm) for bitches
Weight: 90 - 130 lbs (40.2 - 40.2 kg) for dogs, 75 - 100 lbs (33.5 - 33.5 kg) for bitches
Coat Type: The double white coat is made up of coarse guard hairs and a fine undercoat. The long coat outer coat grows quite long; it may vary from straight to slightly wavy. The medium coat outer coat is of medium length and usually lies flat, giving the dog a sleek, racy appearance.
Temperament: The Akbash is a good stable companion and protector with great loyalty and protective instincts. Because of their independent nature, they can respond quickly and without guidance in an emergency.
Special Interest: Due to their strong maternal instinct, the Akbash dogs bond to other living creatures at a very young age. They have been known to form strong attachments to sheep, goats, cattle, horses; to poultry and exotic birds; to deer, alpacas, llamas and other animals; and of course to people. Once bonded, these dogs will not hesitate to risk of their own lives to protect their charges. The Akbash has even been used by American ranchers to ward of bear and coyote.
